If you’ve had your TV on at all in the last three days, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a major partay going on in Washington, DC. Now, I appreciate the historic nature of today’s inauguration, but is all this really necessary? Haven’t we been told that we’re in the middle of the worst economy since the Great Depression? Are there any rational Obama supporters left? Am I the only one who finds this to be garishly indulgent? And, since everything he does will be a historic first, will we have to endure these days-long celebrations to mark his first signing of legislation, his first veto, his first state dinner, his first cup of coffee as President?
More importantly, is there anyone left in the media who hasn’t swallowed the Kool-Aid? I mean, even Fox News is swooning like a schoolgirl. I woke up on Saturday morning at 6:45, saw Steve and Brian on Fox & Friends, and thought I had slept through the alarm clock. I grabbed my phone and looked at the calendar. Nope, it was Saturday all right, but why were Steve and Brian on Fox & Friends on the weekend? Then I noticed the banner across the bottom of my screen, which announced that it was special inauguration day coverage. WTF? Did I sleep through Saturday, Sunday, and Monday? Then this silly Obama Express train that made its way to DC from Philadelphia or somewhere, speeches, concerts, speeches, and more speeches… bleh. In its quest to be “fair and balanced,” Fox News is making itself painfully irrelevant.
To be fair, the left has been without an iconic figure (like Ronald Reagan is for the right) for many years now. Sure, Bill Clinton is well loved and Jimmah Carter pokes his head out of the carpentry shop once in a while to offer criticism of George W. Bush, but there hasn’t been a real leader who personifies the ideological left in a long time. In Barack Obama, the left now has its Ronald Reagan. Good for them. As for me, I’m going to have to find some other channel to keep my TV on at night. Food Network, anyone?

I often tell people that if they ever see me wandering aimlessly around town, looking dazed and confused, they’ll know I’ve lost my iPhone. My whole life is on that phone. Seriously. Without that calendar, I don’t know where to go next, and without the contact list I wouldn’t even know anyone’s number to call to find out where to go. Until recently, the only copy of my calendar in existence was the one on my phone. Too risky.
So a few weeks ago, I was syncing my iPhone on my shiny, new, green law school laptop, and I decided to see what would happen if I synced my iPhone calendar to Outlook 2007 for backup purposes. Sure enough, all four of my iPhone calendars (Me, Mini-Me, School, and Work) got transferred onto Outlook in all their color-coded glory. Success!
A couple of weeks later, I noticed that Google has calendar syncing software that allows you to sync your Outlook calendar with a Google calendar. Hmmmmm… vedddy inteddesting. I’ve since realized that this capability has been available for some period of time, but it was new to me. Anyhoo, I thought this would be a great idea because sometimes I’ll be talking on my iPhone and need to add something to my calendar at the same time, which requires putting the person on hold, which is sortof rude, and I hate rudeness. So, I thought, if I keep a Google calendar, I can access it anywhere, anytime, from any computer. Good idea! I installed the Google syncing software and ran it, and everything came up roses. Now today I’ve learned that this syncing program will only sync your primary Google calendar to Outlook, but I swear on my most annoying cat’s life that it transferred data from all four of my calendars. Anyway, I thought I was quite clever for figuring all this out.
Fast forward to today. I synced my iPhone calendar via iTunes to Outlook, but this time not everything worked like it was supposed to. Turns out only my primary Google calendar was syncing to Outlook (except for that first time, I swear!), so my other three calendars weren’t. I fiddled with it for a long, long time until finally I wound up completely wiping out my iPhone calendar and my Outlook calendars, leaving only the Google calendar version of my whole life in existence. It was at this point that I FREAKED OUT!
Finally, after a full day’s worth of web searching, program installing, weeping and gnashing of teeth, and sackcloth and ashes, I have conquered the calendar-killing beast once and for all. How, you ask? With Calgoo, my new BFF. This remarkable (and free!!) program syncs your Google calenders with Outlook. The catch is, you have to create a whole different calendar in Outlook for each calendar in Google that you want to sync. It’s okay, though, because in Outlook you can make your calendars overlap and view all events from all calendars at once, color-coded and all. It’s a beautiful thing. Then I proceeded to sync my iPhone with Outlook via iTunes again like usual, and — PRESTO!! — my whole life is back on my iPhone where it belongs, safe and sound.
I hope this never happens again. Next time I might end up in the psych ward for treatment of self-mutilation.

I don’t know if it’s something I ate or the flu, but I’m not feeling well. Not at all. I can still function, I’m just miserable while I function. Yuck.
I tried to take my seat deposit up to the law school yesterday in order to hold my seat for the fall, but of course the lady who usually takes care of that was out sick and the substitute couldn’t help me. It’s due on the 20th. Hopefully I can try again today, provided I’m able to function long enough to take a shower and get some makeup on. If not, I’ll try again Monday.
Yesterday my most recent Barnes & Noble order arrived: Getting to Maybe and Law School Confidential. Will post thoughts on these two law school prep books as I plow through them. Currently I’m reading The Great Gatsby, but for some reason I’m having a hard time getting really into it. I’m going to make myself keep reading though, because it’s one of those books that everyone should read.
On the movie list for this weekend: “Thirteen,” “The Phantom of the Opera” (again), and “The Private Eyes.” I hope my 11-year-old daughter (henceforth to be known as “Mini-Me”) likes “The Private Eyes” as much as I did when I was her age.
TGIF!

Alllllllrighty then. The blog is up and running. I think I’ll cover a wide range of topics here, including, but not limited to, the following:
* motherhood
* law school
* cooking
* weight loss
* current events
* politics
* movies and books
* shopping
… and whatever else strikes my fancy.
I tried blogging once before and it just didn’t work out. I didn’t have the time or the proper motivation. Now I have both time and motivation (I think?), so I’m giving it the old college try again. Will plan to start tomorrow with some kind of cleverness.
