two deaths

It’s a bad year to be a celebrity; they seem to be dropping like flies. In case you didn’t crawl out from under your rock in the last week or so, Michael Jackson’s memorial service was held today in Los Angeles. I didn’t watch any of it, but my Twitter stream was packed full of people live-blogging it, so I don’t feel like I missed much. Yes, Michael Jackson was an eccentric and kinda weird guy. Yes, he was accused of doing some horrible things. But don’t forget that he was also a son, a brother, and a father.

If the words of a young girl mourning the death of her father don’t bring tears to your eyes, maybe it’s time to recalibrate your snark-o-meter.

In other “deaths” this week, almost-former AK Governor Sarah Palin is continuing her nonsensical ramblings all over the media. In an interview this morning, after explaining that quitting the governorship doesn’t make her a quitter but a fighter, she stoically accepts whatever the future may hold (one can only hope) for her political career. Wait for it — it’s at the end of the clip.

I caught some of the memorial (didn’t plan on it, but then my mom turned it on) and I didn’t cry through any of it, but Paris at the end…man. Definitely shed a tear on that one. And then I checked Tweetdeck and saw that CBS’s legal expert/analyst, LA-based Andrew Cohen, posted something like “Oh, God, how could they do that to poor Paris??” That irked me for reasons I couldn’t really articulate. A couple minutes later, I checked his twitter page for some reason and sure enough, it had been deleted. My guess is that others thought it was as distasteful as I did. :-P

Yeah, MJ was weird. There are plenty that feel he was guilty of the charges made against him and plenty that think he wasn’t. But that moment when Paris was talking wasn’t even about that. I guess maybe I just felt a surge of protectiveness for that cute little girl. Who knows? I hope his kids have people watching out for them that have their best interests at heart, because the same couldn’t have been said about MJ.

Agreed Master Ninja. After that last bit by Paris, an adjustment of most people’s snark-o-meter will be necessary. I’ve gotta admit, the pols/legal nerd in me smiled when Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee reminded us that in this country people are innocent until proven guilty. The memorial was a time to celebrate this man’s life and contribution to music as a genre, an industry, and a culture. It was a time for those little kids to know their dad was loved. All in all, I thought it surprisingly moving and tasteful.

And Sarah Palin – :::headdesk::: Quitters never win…except for when they quit. She may be a nice lady and all, but her recent ramblings are a bit much. Though the media needs to get a grip as well. Seriously.
